Let’s focus on you and your desire to make money on the Internet… for free!
So you have discovered what you enjoy doing, and what you can see yourself doing on a daily basis. Your next step is to find your “niche” and develop your “long keyword tail”.
Don’t worry if you don’t know what one or even both of those phrases are! That is what this article is for. By the time you are done reading this, you will not only understand what they mean, you will have your niche and long keyword tail in hand – armed and ready to take your next step with making money – for free!!
First thing first… what is a “niche”? Simple! A niche is a piece of the Internet pie.
Let’s take dogs for example. Dogs are a very broad topic. Let’s narrow it down a little bit. Puppies? Well, that is still a little too large. How about “Chocolate Lab Puppies”? Now, THAT is a good niche! So, now that you know what a niche is, it is time to find yours!
There are several way s to go about finding a niche that will profit some cash in your pocket, and still be fun for you. Let’s go with “chocolate lab puppies” for this example. Go to Google, and enter your niche in quotes. So, in your Google toolbar, enter this: “chocolate lab puppies”. Now, look to the right hand of your screen and you will see a blue bar with the results of how many pages there are available on that topic. Well, at the time of writing this, there are 18,900 pages. That is to many. It is time to refine your niche a little bit.
Go back to your Google search bar and enter (in quotes) a refined niche name. Let’s try… “chocolate lab pups”. Ahhh, much better. The search results were at 5,640 at the time of writing this. You should aim for this number to be between 1,000 and 5,000. So, with our number being 5,640… we are close enough!
Now, you have your niche, and believe it or not, your “long keyword tail”.
The difference you may ask? Your niche, you will always stay within. With your niche of “Chocolate Lab Puppies”, you will always be writing and selling things related to chocolate lab puppies. Your long keyword tail however, is not quite so strict. Sure, you will use your long keyword tail when you set up your blogs, and title your articles. But, over time, you can add more, similar long keyword tails to your site. (You will simply go through the same steps again.)
So, what exactly are the steps? I am glad you asked!
1. You have already found what you are passionate about.
2. With your passion in mind, search in quotes, in your Google search bar a long string of words that you can focus your efforts on.
3. When you find one that is approximately between 1,000 and 5,000 for the search result, you have not only your niche, but your long keyword tail.

In short answer….
In long answer… well, you have to make it something you enjoy! If you are going to be making some extra money, you are going to have to put some time into making it successful.
Do you want to spend your time doing something you enjoy, or do you want to spend your time doing something you utterly cannot stand?
That is what I thought. Something you cannot stand. Just kidding.
Of course you are going to want to enjoy what you do to earn extra money in your spare time. Now, what do you enjoy?
Make a list of 10 things that you have always liked, been good at, or even always had a burning desire to try. The first 3 to 5 will most likely be easy. Then, it will begin to get difficult. Don’t Stop though! Keep going – the little gem you are looking for just might pop up later in your list!
If you are having trouble, ask yourself this… “My life is ideal when ____”. That should help you get the ball rolling.
GREAT! You have found what you love to do! (Believe it or not, this is very hard for some people!)
Now, it is time to decide if you are going to pursue this online -or- offline. For example, if you have always loved cleaning windows… you obviously are going to do this offline. However, if you have always enjoyed writing… you can choose to do that either online or offline. No matter what though, I suggest you set up a blog. (Preferably at Squidoo! It is optimized to get ranked highly on Google.)
Now, Go For It! Decide how you are going to market yourself and your service or product. Will you write free articles? Place free ads? Place paid ads? Start a website? Will you have a “membership only” area to your website? Post to forums? Hand out business cards? Place an ad in the newspaper? Maybe you will even stand on the corner of two busy streets in a chicken outfit… The choices are completely up to you.
You can decide how hard you want to work, the hours you want to put in – and when you want to work them! Make this a fun endeavor and you will succeed.
